What are we studying this year in Visual Arts?
Art is an instrument that enhances the aesthetic quality of an individual’s surroundings. Through Art making we can express ourselves in a self-conscious way with creativity and innovative thinking. Therefore it is important to develop a strong artistic sense by studying theories and skills so that we can communicate with each other in a coherent manner.
In our Visual Arts classes this year, we will be working on improving our understanding in of the Arts. Besides this, we will also be developing our Fine Art vocabulary.
We will explore the following important disciplines in order to support the students artistic development:
– Art History (by acquiring knowledge about the contributions artists and art make to culture and society)
– Art Appreciation (by understanding how people justify judgement about art objectives)
– Art Production (by making art)
– Art Criticism (by responding to and making judgements about the properties and qualities that exist in existing works)
How will we know that we have learnt? How can we improve our work ?
We need to reflect on what we need to practice so that we can judge when we are ready to move on to the next chapter of our learning. The purpose of assessment is to inform the student and the teacher of where the students learning is and how we can move forward from this point.. These tasks may be individual assignments, group projects, drawing and written pieces of work in the developmental workbook, verbal presentations, Art critique in the format of an essay and personal engagement in class discussions etc. Personal engagement in any forms of art and design competitions and voluntary duties during or after class is highly encouraged and will show self-motivation, initiative and a willingness to take artistic risks.
Our work will be assessed (= marked/ graded / judged), not compared to other people’s work in the class but by using descriptions of what a good piece of work should have in it. This means judging the work using a list of descriptors within the specific criterion. The criteria have a scale which tells us how well we have been able to complete a task and helps the teacher to decide which grade to give for the task or for a unit of work in this subject. This checklist of criterion with a scale is called a Rubric or a Grid.
